INTRODUCES THE TOPIC, CREATES INTEREST, AND
ENDS WITH THE THESIS
First, go to Section 3 and write your thesis statement. Doing so will keep you focused.
Then, write Sections 1 and 2.
Section or Sentence 1 GIVES A BROAD VIEW of the topic that is thought provoking and intellectually engaging. It puts the significance of the topic into perspective. It may also be thematic or historical in nature.
Section or Sentence 2 NARROWS THE FOCUS and moves your thinking toward the thesis statement. Here, if you are using a text, also known as a primary source, you might introduce the author, the title, the genre. This section should connect to Section 1 and Section 3.
Section or Sentence 3 is THE THESIS STATEMENT, a complete sentence that reveals the MAIN IDEA of what the writer will be explaining, proving, arguing, analyzing, comparing, contrasting, describing, or summarizing in the body paragraphs of the essay. It is a CRITICAL SENTENCE in the essay and demands close attention and effort.
THE CONCLUSION FOR YOUR RESPONSE TO LITERATURE
Gives a Finished Feeling to the Whole Essay
Sentence or Section 1 reminds the reader as to the purpose for writing this essay. Do not repeat the thesis statement. Close your eyes and say to yourself, “In this essay, I want my reader to understand that . . .” Then, open your eyes and write your answer. It should be narrow and focused.
Sentence or Section 2 discusses why this topic is an important topic to discuss. Do not add any new details. It is reflective of your essay as a whole.
Sentence or Section 3 is the last impression you will make on your reader. It should demonstrate your deeper understanding of the topic and give the “big picture” of its importance. It should be broad and contemplative.
